The Opportunity
Recreation and Culture Services builds vibrant, healthy, active and connected communities by providing facilities and programs that give all Barrie residents an opportunity to participate in recreational activities. Key responsibilities include identifying community recreation needs and interests, developing and delivering recreation opportunities which meet these needs and interests, maintaining and operating recreational and cultural facilities to provide a setting for these activities, and managing the provision of space to external community providers and groups.
Under the general guidance and direction of the Supervisor of Recreation Facilities, the Recreation Sports Field Operator position is for performing routine maintenance and operational tasks for the City of Barrie’s sports fields and the Barrie Community Sports Complex (BCSC). Specifically, this position performs daily maintenance tasks such as cutting and trimming grass, collecting waste and debris, painting and lining fields, setting up sports tournaments, and maintaining and grooming mounds, base lines, and warning tracks. Overall, this position plays an integral role in performing routine maintenance and operation tasks within the City’s sports fields and the Barrie Community Sports Complex (BCSC) in order to provide a safe, clean, and enjoyable environment for recreation programs and activities.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications) 
  • Secondary School Diploma
  • Standard First Aid and CPR Level C Certifications
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certification obtained prior to start date

Experience 
  • Six (6) months of experience performing duties related to the above mentioned major responsibilities in a recreation, parks, golf course, or sports field work environment
Knowledge/Skill/Ability 
  • Working knowledge of turf maintenance principles and techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • exert effort to lift, push, pull, or carry objects for short periods of time
    • exert effort to perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, reaching, grasping, bending forward, stooping, kneeling, crouching or turning
    • maintain a high standard of public relations at all times
    • perform in a manner which is consistent with corporate goals, vision, mission, and values
    • work independently with minimal supervision
  • Basic verbal communication, written communication, customer service, teamwork, attention to detail, and time management skills
  • Basic computer literacy utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, and Word)
  • Availability to work outside of scheduled work hours to perform standby/on-call or emergency response duties
  • Availability to work weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays
Conditions of Employment
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License in good standing
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Screening*
*Please note that this is a requirement of the position for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Policy. Existing employees who have met this criteria will be exempt from this requirement.
Other Important Information
Location: Barrie Community Sports Complex, Barrie, Ontario
*Please note that the City has a Hybrid Work Program Policy in place that may allow a hybrid work arrangement of up to one (1) remote day per week for employees who meet eligibility requirements. 
Hours: The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
Wage: This position is within the CUPE Local 2380 Bargaining Unit with the following pay level and 2025 pay range:
  • Pay Level: Level 3
  • Yearly Salary: $55,827.20 to $66,830.40
  • Hourly Pay Rate: $26.84 to $32.13
